What Happens in Year 6
Our topics throughout the year are:
- Groovy Greeks – in which the children discover all about Greek life and The Olympics. In Geography, the children look at using grid references and ordinance survey maps.
- Incredible Creatures – where the children classify animals and look at evolution in Science. In Art we study Vincent Van Gough’s sunflowers and in Design and Technology the children create their very own healthy smoothies.
- Lights, Camera, Action – where the children look at light and electricity in Science, crime and punishment in History, moving pictures in Art and we look at the ten commandments in RE.
These are all taught alongside Maths and English, as part of cross-curricular learning.
We also have PE twice a week (swimming in the Autumn term), Music, Computing, French and PSHE which are taught in school every week.
There are several different ways we teach spellings here at Sneyd Green. In Year 6, we continue to work on different spelling rules. In addition to this, we also have keywords that the children need to learn to spell. Each child is given a keyword spelling sheet with all the words for Year 3, Year 4, Year 5 and Year 6. The children are tested on these throughout the year and they are crossed off the list when they can spell them confidently. To see the keywords for Year 6 click here.
In Year 6 children continue to work on their Marvellous Multiplications. By the end of the year they should know and apply all multiplication and division facts for all times tables to 12 x 12
