The children learn through the following topics in Year 1:

  • Amazing Animals
  • All Aboard
  • Natural World

There are several different ways we teach spellings here at Sneyd Academy. In Year 1, we continue to work on the children’s phonics knowledge. In addition to this, we also have keywords that the children need to learn to spell. Each child is given a keyword spelling sheet with all the words for Reception, Year 1 and Year 2. The children are tested on these throughout the year and they are crossed off the list when they can spell them confidently.

In Year 1 children start to complete their Brilliant Bonds. By the end of the year they should be able to recall their number bonds to 5, 10 and 20. We would also like them to be able to count in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s.

Example test:

1) 1 +? = 10
2) 2 +?= 10
3) 3 +? = 10
4) 4 +? = 10
5) 5 +? = 10
6) 6 +? = 10
7) 7 +? = 10
8) 8 +? = 10
9) 9 +? = 10
10) 10 +? = 10
