What Happens in Year 4
In Year 4 children are planned for, taught and assessed following the National Curriculum guidelines. All lessons are planned for and resourced in a variety of ways to suit all learning styles.
Our topics in Year 4 are:
- Walk Like an Egyptian – in this topic we will learn all about Ancient Egyptian history and culture. The children are always fascinated by the fact that the Egyptians stored their organs in canopic jars!
- A River Runs Through It – in this topic we learn all about the water cycle and look at rivers across the world. We also link this to our visit to London as we spend some time looking at the River Thames.
- Fit For Life – in this topic we learn all about healthy eating and exercise and how this affects our digestive system.
Each term our learning will be based around a text. In our writing lessons, there is a big focus on grammar and understanding the terminology as well as how to apply it. The children will have a separate spelling lesson 3 times a week and will bring home a spelling sheet to practice each week. We will also encourage the children to write in a cursive style and they will be able to earn a pen licence if this is consistent in all of their books.
There are several different ways we teach spellings here at Sneyd Academy. In Year 4, we continue to work on different spelling rules. In addition to this, we also have keywords that the children need to learn to spell. Each child is given a keyword spelling sheet with all the words for Year 3, Year 4, Year 5 and Year 6. The children are tested on these throughout the year and they are crossed off the list when they can spell them confidently. To see the keywords for Year 4 click here.
In Year 4 children continue to work on their Marvellous Multiplications. By the end of the year they should know by heart multiplication and division facts for 10, 2, 5,3, 4, 6, 8, 7, 9, 11 and 12 times tables.
