Nursery Mathematics

Curriculum Overview

Maths is an essential part of everyday life and we aim for children to have positive experiences of maths right from their Nursery year. Activities are planned so that children can interact with them both under direction and independently in ‘continuous provision’ sessions. Mathematical experiences are introduced during direct teaching sessions and then a wide range of linked opportunities and activities are created and left in areas around the classroom so children can access them throughout the week

Children learn about maths through play and through their daily experiences. The more hands on it is, the better and more meaningful it is to them. In nursery, our indoor and outdoor environment is full of mathematical opportunities for the children to explore. These are bright, interactive and changed on a regular basis. We provide a range of exciting activities and resources to allow the children to develop their counting skills, sorting skills, comparing, describing and early calculation skills. Our nursery team support the children to be creative, critical thinkers, problem solvers and most importantly, to have a go!

We use a fantastic resource called ‘Ten Town’ which is a unique Early Years resource designed to introduce and develop number formation and number recognition. Each number has its own story and character to help the children to develop their knowledge and understanding of numbers. Ten Town also has songs and activities which link to the characters. These support recall and are designed to make numbers memorable.

By the end of Nursery, we expect the children to:

Count and recognise numbers to 5

Subitise to 3

Create patterns

Compare quantities

Talk about shapes
