In year 3 we provide a fun and creative curriculum. Our topics are ‘The Stone Age’, ‘ The Circle of Life’ and ‘ The Roaring Romans’ and all our lessons are planned so that the children can apply their English and Mathematical skills across the curriculum.

In our first topic the ‘The Stone Age’, we learn about prehistoric periods of History including the Neolithic and the Mesolithic period. Children will learn about how people from the Stone Age lived, including Stone Henge.

In our second topic the ‘The Circle of Life’, children will engage in Geography where they will learn about the Amazon Rainforest. They will also learn about habitats, plants and animals in Science.

Finally, we come to our third topic the ‘Roaring Romans’. In Science, we will learn about forces. In History, we will learn about Ancient Rome and Mount Vesuvius which links to our Geography learning on earthquakes and volcanoes.

Year 3 is the first year where children will receive swimming lessons as part of their PE curriculum. This will be in the Spring term after Christmas. Every child is expected to take part in these lessons.

There are several different ways we teach spellings here at Sneyd Academy. In Year 3, we continue to work on different spelling rules. In addition to this, we also have keywords that the children need to learn to spell. Each child is given a keyword spelling sheet with all the words for Year 3, Year 4, Year 5 and Year 6. The children are tested on these throughout the year and they are crossed off the list when they can spell them confidently.
