In order to ensure that staff are able to deliver high quality reading lessons, we offer whole-school CPD in reading on a regular basis. We understand that the best interventions are the ones with the most structure and the most support for teaching assistants and other support staff. With this in mind, INSET days and staff meetings are allocated to ensure that all staff are up to date in how to best plan for the teaching of reading, including phonics and early reading.
SEND services are used to ensure that staff are aware of the need for language acquisition and they understand the impact that this lack of language may have on children who have not been absorbed in a language-rich environment before their school journey has begun. All staff place language acquisition in high regard and they understand the importance of exposure to new language as well as the need for pupils to experiment with new vocabulary.
Through careful planning of PPA time, staff are given the opportunity to share planning and resources with other practitioners within the same cohort or phase. Where needed, staff are given time to work with senior leaders and/or SLEs to deliver the best practice in reading lessons as well as where reading links to other areas of the foundation curriculum and into writing.
